Organic Modern Family Room Furnishing in West Springs

Warm woods, natural textures, and organic modern design bring a more collected feel to this West Springs family home.
Because living with two young boys and a cat is no reason to give up on having nice things.

For this young family of four, the goal was to create living and dining spaces that better suited a main-floor living room relied upon for both hosting and enjoying a little ‘grown-up time’, while remaining genuinely comfortable for everyday life. They wanted a more modern, stylized space, but one that could still handle movie nights, casual dinners, two young boys, and the cat claiming the best seat in the house.

The existing furnishings weren’t quite delivering that balance. An oversized grey sectional overwhelmed the living room, while a relatively new dining table was already peeling and showing wear. Both rooms needed pieces better suited to the way the family lived, whether that meant a more considered scale, lasting materials, plenty of comfortable seating, or simply furnishings that could hold their own against real life.

Without changing the architecture, we furnished and decorated the two spaces with warm woods, tactile textiles, organic neutral materials, and layers of durable art and accessories.

Family Room

The biggest change in the family room began with the layout. The original oversized sectional cut across the room, creating a visual and physical barrier between the seating area and the main flow of traffic connecting the kitchen, hallway, and stairs.

We moved the primary seating to the far windows, replacing the sectional with a three-seat sofa and chaise. A console behind it creates a subtle division from the dining room, while an arched floor lamp reaches over the chaise to make this end of the sofa an especially inviting place to curl up with a book. We also gave the existing stone fireplace a stronger presence with tall black-framed mirrors and flanking slim battery-operated sconces. Replacing the smaller mirrors with this more generous scale adds to the fireplace’s grandeur, while the crisp black frames support our modern intention.

Opposite the sofa, two boxy leather swivel chairs provide generous seating without adding the visual weight of another sofa along the angled stair wall. Their smaller footprint keeps the entrance into the family room feeling open, while the swivel function allows them to turn toward the television, fireplace, sofa, or each other.

A large plaid wool rug grounds the expanded seating arrangement, visually connecting pieces that now have more room to breathe. A solid wood round coffee table nestles neatly into the chaise, while a petite stone table and lamp between the leather chairs give this pair everything they need to function as their own fireside conversation spot.

A pair of upholstered ottomans completes the conversation circle in front of the fireplace and adds another layer of flexibility. They can serve as occasional seating, perch comfortably by the fire, or be pulled over as footrests for the swivel chairs.

Every seat now has access to a surface, comfortable lighting, and the larger conversation, creating an organic modern family room that feels significantly more spacious without sacrificing the generous seating this family needed.

Dining Room

The dining table is styled with a ceramic vase, dark blue table runner, and place settings beneath a linear pendant light.

The clients loved the look of their existing table, but its failing finish wouldn’t keep up with family life. We replaced it with a solid wood, custom-stained dining table that brings warmth and durability to the space, with the flexibility to expand when hosting.

A sculptural pedestal base keeps the visual weight toward the centre of the room, an important consideration in a dining area that is more compact than the adjoining family room. We repurposed the clients’ existing black dining chairs, with plans to add two more at the ends of the table when needed.

Large-scale greenery and new artwork bring colour and softness to the surrounding hard surfaces. Muted blues introduce a welcome layer to the existing black, white, and neutral palette, becoming the thread we carried through the finishing details and décor.

Between the family room and dining room, a sculptural wood console conceals the back of the sofa and gives the dining room a more finished, sideboard-like view. A future upholstered bench will tuck beneath it, ready to pull up when the dining table is extended while adding a softer counterpoint to all that beautiful wood.

It’s also a nice example of the furnishings doing more than simply filling a room: the console bridges the family and dining spaces, while the future bench will make that transition even more purposeful.

Decor Details

The finishing details carried the material palette, mixing warm wood, rich warm metals, oversized pottery, glossy white accents, and layered textiles. Plaid frames add subtle pattern, while linen-look boxes hide everyday necessities like remotes without sacrificing the styling.

In the dining room, a chunky navy knit layered over creamy linen softens the solid wood table and expands on the complementary blue we wanted to introduce. Oversized pottery and faux florals add height and organic shape, while sculptural pieces, including the glossy white urns on the fireplace mantel, balance the softer textures with cleaner, more modern forms.
