I’ve never been big into the whole “trendsetting” thing, but… 2024 has me excited.

When it comes to the world of interior design, the upcoming new year feels a bit different. It really seems like we’ll be waving goodbye to all those mundane, cookie-cutter interiors and saying hello to an era of design that has a personalized charm and embraces a more warm, sanctuary-esque vibe. Totally in line with my ‘homes that hug’ mantra.

So let’s make our way through the anticipated interior design trends of 2024 and how you can use them to transform your home into a place that supports your family, impresses your friends, and hugs you when you walk in the door!

2024 Design Trend #1: Colours

benjamin moore blue nova

This year, our favourite paint brands have rolled out their ‘Colours of the Year’ and they are something else. These shades represent what’s trendy, but also evoke emotion and help transform rooms into moments.

Benjamin Moore

Benjamin Moore steps up with Blue Nova (CC-860). It’s deep, intriguing, yet reassuringly calm. Blue Nova is a mid-tone that’s got this enchanting duality of classic and sophisticated.

Behr

Starting with Behr, they’ve chosen Cracked Pepper (PPU18-01), a versatile black that acts as a backdrop for life’s little scenes. This stunning soft black makes every other shade pop and every moment stand out. It is truly a supporting character.

Sherwin Williams

Sherwin Williams is bringing us Upward (SW 6239), a blissful blue that’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s the colour of slowing down, breathing easy, and clearing your mind.

So, what’s the big colour takeaway for the upcoming year? 2024’s colours create atmospheres that support your design aesthetic and lay the foundation for intentional layering. It’s about rooms that aren’t just seen but felt, spaces that don’t just host your life but enhance it.

2024 Design Trend #2: Architectural Enhancements

Architectural wall treatments are like the blue jeans of interior design – they’re always in style, and they definitely aren’t going anywhere in 2024. I’m talking about the classics here – wainscotting and picture frame moulding – my specialty!

Wainscotting

Traditionally made of wood, wainscotting is basically panelling that covers the lower part of your walls. It adds a layer of depth, texture, and character to any room by bringing in a classic charm to the modern home. Plus, it’s super versatile. Whether your home is going for a cozy cottage feel or something more stately and elegant, wainscotting fits right in.

Picture Frame Molding

No, this isn’t about framing for your family photos. Picture frame molding frames sections of your wall with decorative trim. It’s a series of panels that can be square, rectangular, or even more elaborate shapes. It adds instant architectural interest and a sense of bespoke craftsmanship to your space. This type of molding doesn’t overpower a room, but rather complements whatever style you’ve got going on.

In 2024, it’s clear that we’ll be leaning towards design choices that have stood the test of time. Remember those diagonal and geometric wood wall designs that were all the rage? They’re taking a backseat. Because when it comes to long-term love and adding value to your home, the classics win every time. They’re a good investment given that their appeal lasts and installing them actually can increase the value of your home.

2024 Design Trend #3: European French Country

My time has finally come!

*Queue victorious fist in the air*

I’ve only been waiting my whole career to say bonjour to one of my all time fave design styles – European French Cottage. It’s warm. It’s comfy. It’s the best. This style was fairly hot in 2023, and it’s only getting more refined into 2024.

I love European French cottage because it isn’t the kind of design that feels like you can’t touch anything (which the traditional French Provincial can sometimes evoke). It’s inviting and has a sort of lived-in elegance that makes you want to curl up with a good book and a cup of coffee.

Here are some of the key features that make European French Provincial what it is:

  • Natural materials like stone and brick give this style a rustic yet refined feel. It’s like bringing a piece of the French outdoors, right into your home.
  • Warm wood furniture that looks like it’s been there for generations, even if it’s brand spankin’ new.
  • Soft, subtle colours like beiges, creams, soft blues, and gentle greens create a backdrop of serenity and warm elegance.
  • Quality antique pieces that have stories to tell. It’s about blending the old with the new in a way that feels seamless. A gorgeous antique dining table or a vintage armoire can completely transform a room. Check out these Calgary thrift and consignment stores for amazing second hand decor!

European French Provincial style creates spaces that feel personal, have character, and tell a story. It’s a style that’s unpretentious and utterly charming.

2024 Design Trend #4: Statement Pieces

We can’t talk about the interior design trends of 2024 without talking about statement pieces. These are the furnishings in a room that catch your eye, ignite conversations, and give your space a touch of personality. In the upcoming year, I will definitely be incorporating more custom statement pieces among warm neutrals to create seriously sophisticated spaces.

Picture this (don’t think too hard though, you can see the photo I’ve included to illustrate my point) – a sleek, floor-to-ceiling black wine cabinet. Not just a place to store your wine, but a stunning centrepiece in the dining room. Against a backdrop of warm neutral tone.

This kind of statement piece stands out and brings a level of depth and modernity to the room. It produces eye-catching contrast – the deep, rich black of the cabinet against the softer, understated hues of the room.

It’s not solely about colour contrast though. It’s also about the interplay of styles. You can have a room that speaks of comfort and simplicity, and then bam – a statement piece that adds a layer of luxury. It’s sort of like wearing a classic outfit with a chunky bold accessory. Suddenly, the whole look is elevated.

In 2024, the integration of statement pieces will be a popular choice. It’s about finding that one item – be it a piece of furniture, a unique light fixture, or a big black wine cabinet – that can stand strong as a stunning focal point.

2024 Design Trend #5: Countertops

We’re FINALLY moving away from those harsh grey veins that have dominated kitchen and bathroom countertops for years and easing into something softer and more subtle.

cambria everleigh

I’ll be specifically drawing countertop inspo from Cambria’s Everleigh in the new year (and hoping to get it into my own house). This style, with its gentle patterning and warm hues, complements a wide range of design aesthetics, from minimalist to more traditional.

If strong veining is still your preference, don’t worry! There are some beautiful new designs coming out that are simply softer in their aesthetic. Look to porcelain for designs that are striking with an almost water-colour treatment. And many more options with both warm and cool tones mixed to match many designs tones.

The shift to softer countertop designs really creates harmony by supporting your aesthetic, not overpowering it. If you’re planning a remodel, think about going subtle with the countertops. It’s a change that’s not just stylish but also incredibly versatile, making your space feel more cohesive and, well… just plain gorge.

2024 Design Trend #6: Lighting

Lighting is a big part of your home’s personality, so let’s shine some light on upcoming trends!

Metals

Silvers, chromes, and golds, oh my! In 2024, expect metal finishes to be all the rage. They’re perfect for those who love a bit of shine and sophistication in their spaces. From silver pendant lights to bold gold floor lamps, these metallic fixtures are all about making a sleek, stylish statement.

Sculptural Statement Fixtures

In 2024, we’ll be seeing lighting designs that are more like sculptures than just light sources – show-stopping chandeliers, shapes, and stunning designs to add flair of drama and intrigue.

Natural Materials

Designers are getting creative with wood, glass, and even stone, crafting light fixtures that feel organic and grounded. It offers a way to bring the outdoors in, but in a super chic way. These materials look beautiful, but also add a warm, earthy vibe to your space that’s instantly calming.

Smart Lighting

It’s 2024 after all, so we can’t forget about smart lighting. This trend continues to grow, with technology allowing us to control our lights like never before – from our phones, with timers, and even adjusting colour temperature to suit our mood. The important takeaway here is that our lives are getting so complicated and fast paced, that creating scenes and lighting stories throughout our day to support our activities. I, for example, have my bedroom lights dim at 11pm to tell me it is time to go to bed (im a night own… and Chicago Med has a tendency to make me lose track of time!). We also have the downstairs hallway lights go off automatically so the dogs know when to settle in (and so I don’t have to get up again!).

2024 Design Trend #7: Mid-Century Modern On the Outs

Unpopular opinion. I don’t love mid-century modern. So, I’m happy to report that it looks like we’re slowly but surely beginning to wave goodbye to the craze that’s had a stronghold on the market for quite a while now – or at least it is transitioning to something a bit less cumbersome.

Don’t get me wrong, mid-century has a place in design – but we’re overdue for something new. And there’s a few contenders in the spotlight right now.

Refined Rustic

There’s a growing love for what I like to call ‘refined rustic’. This style takes the coziness of traditional mid century modern but gives it a polished and ‘raw’ twist at the same time. Natural textures, soft, earthy tones, and a hint of sophistication. It’s all about creating spaces that feel warm and welcoming but with a bit of a grown-up feel.

Dopamine Decor

Dopamine decor is meant to give your senses a blast of joy. It serves bold, maximalist vibes with joyful colours that pop and patterns that aren’t afraid to make a statement. Vibrant wallpapers, punchy textiles, and eye-catching art aplenty.

Warm Minimalist

This isn’t the stark minimalism of years past – it’s softer and much more livable. It’s clean, uncluttered spaces that are also warm and inviting. The focus is on quality over quantity – a few well-chosen pieces that make a big impact.

Sustainable

Sustainability has been ‘trending’ for years now, but it is finally becoming more attainable for different price points. This baseline is all about eco-friendly materials, biophilic elements, and sustainable practices.  It’s design with a conscience, and it’s looking good while doing good.

And there you have it – Our favourite interior design trends of 2024, all wrapped up. But let’s take a moment to talk about something that’s more than just a trend. This year, let’s focus on creating spaces that do more than just look good – they feel good. Our homes should support us not just functionally, but also socially and emotionally.
